$4.4M Settlement to Elevator Mechanic Injured in Workplace

An elevator mechanic who was severely injured during the construction of Philadelphia’s Comcast Center office tower in 2007 is receiving a $4.4 million settlement to compensate him for his injuries. The worker, Darrin Ulmer, who was 39 years old at the time of the incident, was helping to move a heavy elevator door onto a drywall cart in a lobby of the then-under-construction office building when a protective floor cover he was standing on shifted and slipped, causing him to lose control of the door and badly hurt his left arm, according to a Feb. 16 story by The Legal Intelligencer. $5.5M Settlement to Student Severely Injured in School Crosswalk

A young woman who was severely injured in December 2012 in Bremerton, Wash., when she was struck by a vehicle in a school crosswalk as she walked to her high school for classes will receive a $5.5 million settlement to compensate her for her injuries. The victim. Regina Monzon, was 17 years old on Dec. 12, 2012, when she was struck by a vehicle in a poorly lit crosswalk in a school zone on her way to class at Olympic High School in Bremerton, according to a Feb. 16 story by the Kitsap County Daily News. Monzon permanently lost all of her hair when it was caught on the vehicle’s driveshaft under the car and she suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash, the story reported. $56.5M Verdict Awarded to Severely Injured Calif. Highway Worker

A 26-year-old California road construction employee who was struck by a car while working on a highway project in Eureka, Calif. in 2011 has been awarded $56.5 million in damages by a jury to compensate him for catastrophic injuries he suffered in the incident, including a severe brain injury and quadriplegia. The victim, Kyle Anderson, was working for his employer, All Phase Excavating, on a night-time  project for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) in August 2011 on the shoulder of Broadway and Highway 101 when Anderson was struck by an approaching vehicle, according to a Feb. 2, 2017 story by KRCR TV Channel 7.   Continue reading “$56.5M Verdict Awarded to Severely Injured Calif. $10M Settlement to 5 Children Injured in Calif. School Bus Crash

A 2014 school bus crash in California that left 5 children injured has resulted in a $10 million settlement for the families of the young victims. The students were riding in the school bus in the Orange Unified School District in Anaheim Hills, Calif., on April 24, 2014 when the bus veered off a road and struck several trees, according to a Jan. 24, 2017, story by The Orange County Register newspaper. At least 5 of the 11 students who were on the bus were injured, including 1 student who suffered a traumatic brain Injury, the report states. The driver of the bus, Gerald Rupple, was transporting the students to their homes from El Rancho Charter Middle School following an after-school activity, the paper reported in an earlier story.
