$4.85M Settlement to Bicyclist Hurt On Poorly-Kept City Sidewalk

A California man has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the City of San Diego in connection to severe injuries he suffered in 2014 when he crashed while riding his bicycle on a sidewalk that had been lifted by large tree roots.

The victim, Clifford Brown, landed on his head and tore spinal cord ligaments, lost several teeth and suffered a possible stroke when he and his 21-speed Schwinn bicycle were “launched” about 28 feet by a sidewalk that was raised up due to underground tree roots in the Del Cerro neighborhood of the city according to a March 1 story by the San Diego Union-Tribune. $5M Settlement to Family of N.J. Woman Killed in 2014 Car-Truck Crash

The family of a 50-year-old Freehold, N.J., woman who was killed when her car burst into flames after being rear-ended by a tractor-trailer at a red light in 2014 will receive a $5 million settlement in the case.

The victim, Heidi Bennett, was killed on March 31, 2014, as she sat in her automobile and was struck by the truck as she was waiting at a red light on the southbound side of Route 9 at Old Mill Road in Old Bridge, N.J., according to a March 21 story on NJ.com. $13.4M in Damages Awarded in Med Mal Heart Surgery Case

A Georgia man who suffered catastrophic injuries during heart surgery in 2010 in a South Dakota hospital has been awarded $13.4 million in damages by a federal court judge.

The plaintiff, Hudson Myers, was 21 years old when he underwent “controversial” heart valve replacement surgery on Oct. 14, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, according to a March 3 story by The (Sioux Falls, S.D.)
