A California man has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the City of San Diego in connection to severe injuries he suffered in 2014 when he crashed while riding his bicycle on a sidewalk that had been lifted by large tree roots.

The victim, Clifford Brown, landed on his head and tore spinal cord ligaments, lost several teeth and suffered a possible stroke when he and his 21-speed Schwinn bicycle were “launched” about 28 feet by a sidewalk that was raised up due to underground tree roots in the Del Cerro neighborhood of the city according to a March 1 story by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The family of a 50-year-old Freehold, N.J., woman who was killed when her car burst into flames after being rear-ended by a tractor-trailer at a red light in 2014 will receive a $5 million settlement in the case.

The victim, Heidi Bennett, was killed on March 31, 2014, as she sat in her automobile and was struck by the truck as she was waiting at a red light on the southbound side of Route 9 at Old Mill Road in Old Bridge, N.J., according to a March 21 story on NJ.com.

A Georgia man who suffered catastrophic injuries during heart surgery in 2010 in a South Dakota hospital has been awarded $13.4 million in damages by a federal court judge.

The plaintiff, Hudson Myers, was 21 years old when he underwent “controversial” heart valve replacement surgery on Oct. 14, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, according to a March 3 story by The (Sioux Falls, S.D.) Argus Leader.

An elevator mechanic who was severely injured during the construction of Philadelphia’s Comcast Center office tower in 2007 is receiving a $4.4 million settlement to compensate him for his injuries. The worker, Darrin Ulmer, who was 39 years old at the time of the incident, was helping to move a heavy elevator door onto a drywall cart in a lobby of the then-under-construction office building when a protective floor cover he was standing on shifted and slipped, causing him to lose control of the door and badly hurt his left arm, according to a Feb. 16 story by The Legal Intelligencer.

A young woman who was severely injured in December 2012 in Bremerton, Wash., when she was struck by a vehicle in a school crosswalk as she walked to her high school for classes will receive a $5.5 million settlement to compensate her for her injuries. The victim. Regina Monzon, was 17 years old on Dec. 12, 2012, when she was struck by a vehicle in a poorly lit crosswalk in a school zone on her way to class at Olympic High School in Bremerton, according to a Feb. 16 story by the Kitsap County Daily News. Monzon permanently lost all of her hair when it was caught on the vehicle’s driveshaft under the car and she suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash, the story reported. She was a junior in the school at the time of the crash.

A 26-year-old California road construction employee who was struck by a car while working on a highway project in Eureka, Calif. in 2011 has been awarded $56.5 million in damages by a jury to compensate him for catastrophic injuries he suffered in the incident, including a severe brain injury and quadriplegia. The victim, Kyle Anderson, was working for his employer, All Phase Excavating, on a night-time  project for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) in August 2011 on the shoulder of Broadway and Highway 101 when Anderson was struck by an approaching vehicle, according to a Feb. 2, 2017 story by KRCR TV Channel 7.

A 2014 school bus crash in California that left 5 children injured has resulted in a $10 million settlement for the families of the young victims. The students were riding in the school bus in the Orange Unified School District in Anaheim Hills, Calif., on April 24, 2014 when the bus veered off a road and struck several trees, according to a Jan. 24, 2017, story by The Orange County Register newspaper. At least 5 of the 11 students who were on the bus were injured, including 1 student who suffered a traumatic brain Injury, the report states. The driver of the bus, Gerald Rupple, was transporting the students to their homes from El Rancho Charter Middle School following an after-school activity, the paper reported in an earlier story.

A former UCLA college football player who lost part of his left leg when he was struck by a taxi van while riding his motorcycle in July 2012 in Los Angeles will receive a $27.5 million damage award to compensate him for his severe injuries. The victim, Amir “Nick” Ekbatani, who is now 29, was hurt on July 14, 2012, when he was riding his motorcycle on Pacific Coast Highway at Diamond Street when a taxi van being driven by Mesfin Kinfu allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way and struck Ekbatani’s motorcycle in the intersection, according to a Jan. 9 report by The (Torrance, Calif.) Daily Breeze.
